With the weekend fast approaching towards the Cage Contender 6 event in Altrincham, England, we caught up with fight promoter John Ferguson to talk about the fights on the card and the main event that seems to be catching the eye of many international fight fans.

Fight fans in Europe are in for a treat this weekend, when two of the continents fastest rising welterweight stars collide in the cage. Danny Mitchell (8-1) takes on Gunnar Nelson (6-0-1) in a battle that is already expected to rival some of the fight of the year contenders in the award stakes. Nelson, who holds two gold medals from the IBJFF Pan American Championships in 2009, goes into the fight as an underdog against his more experienced counterpart. Mitchell has picked up wins against M-1 Team England welterweight Simon Phillips, as well as Cage Rage veterans Jordan James and Lee Doski.

“Preparation for this one has been the same as any other Cage Contender,” says promoter John Ferguson. “We’ve had a few more problems this time because it’s a new market, but we’ve battled through it and we are now coming out the other side. Ticket sales are going strong and it’s really starting to work."

The promotion makes its debut in England, having already held various shows in Northern Ireland. While the card features eleven quality fights, it is the main event that has captured the imagination of fans and fighters alike.

“They’ve both impressed me. Danny (Mitchell) had the balls to step up when a lot of others didn’t,” states Ferguson. “We offered this fight to a few people, a few high profile people and they all said 'no'."

The card will also feature a number of local fighters, as well as several well known U.K. fighters from the scene. Wolfslair middleweight Tony Moran will be in action against Chris Fields. Fast rising bantamweights James Doolan and Greg Knapp collide in what is sure to be a great fight, and UFC and Cage Rage veteran Leigh Remedios is up against Rob McCrum.

“We always work with local fighters anywhere that we go, and although we are one of the premier events in the U.K. and the biggest in Ireland, I still see ourselves primarily as a local show,” admits the promoter.

Another fight that has gained a lot of interest is the one between Declan Williams and Damian Rooney. Both of the bantamweights have been tipped for a bright future in the sport. Rooney, who has been training with the HIT Squad in America, is touted as one of the brightest prospects coming out of Ireland, while Williams has made a name with his lethal knockout power.

“A local fighter called Declan Williams, from Manchester, who fights out of Predators, he’s fighting probably one of the hottest prospects in Ireland at the minute – Damian Rooney,” notes Ferguson, who is quick to praise both fighters' ability.

Whilst the event is gaining exposure online, it is also being aired in a number of different countries across the world. Fans will be able to watch the event in Africa, Asia, America, the U.K., Australia, and Iceland. The Icelandic television network, in particular, is an impressive coup, and allows Nelson’s home support to watch their fighter in action.

“This fight at Cage Contender 6 is broadcast in 23 countries on television, so it’s giving Nelson and Mitchell another big push forward,” adds Ferguson.

It is expected to be a fantastic night of mixed martial arts action. For more information about the event and to purchase tickets, visit
