· Lorenzo Fertitta Confirms Several Upcoming Bouts Via Twitter
Seemingly suffering from a case of insomnia, UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta opened himself up for questions late last night via his personal twitter account. While some of the answers given were simply rehashing things we already knew, a major UFC title defense was given date and a few rumored bouts were confirmed.
Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem clash for the heavyweight championship on Memorial Day weekend in Vegas.
After a crushing first round victory against Brock Lesnar at his December 30 UFC debut, it was no secret Alistair Overeem would be the next man to face newly crowned heavyweight king Junior Dos Santos for his title, but the battle of heavyweight strikers has now been given a time and place.
Cigano is coming off a momentous win of his own, as he was able to wrest the title from Cain Velasquez in a mere 64 seconds. The Brazilian will be making his first title defense in what is a title unification bout between the UFC and Strikeforce heavyweight champions.
Confirmed: Cain Velasquez returns to action against Frank Mir.
When asked about Frank Mir’s next opponent, Fertitta confirmed that Mir will be the man charged with welcoming Cain back to The Octagon. Velasquez, coming off a deflation 64-second title defeat to Junior Dos Santos in November at UFC on Fox 1, will have his hands full if he intends to get back on the winning side of things as fellow former champion Frank Mir has been rolling as of late.
Currently riding a three-fight winning streak, Mir was last seen at UFC 140, where he overcame early adversity and became the first man in history to defeat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Confirmed: Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin III.
After a fan asked whom Forrest Griffin’s next fight will be against, Lorenzo simply responded, “Tito”.
Ortiz (1-5-1 since 2006) who is coming off thorough beatings at the hands of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Rashad Evans, recently stated that he would like to have just one more fight in the UFC before hanging the gloves up for good, and he would like it to be against the aforementioned Griffin. It would seem that the newly self-proclaimed “People’s Champ” will get his wish, and end his career on a rubber match with the original "Ultimate Fighter."
Forrest will be looking to bounce back from an early knockout loss to Shogun Rua at UFC 134 last August. Griffin holds the more recent victory of the series as the two last met at UFC 106 in November of 2009.
