Falcao, Amoussou Victorious At Bellator 69
Maiquel Falcao took home the season six middleweight tournament championship Friday evening at Bellator 69 from the L'Auberge du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La., and aired on MTV2 and Spike.com with an impressive decision victory over Andreas Spang. While in the welterweight semi-final Karl Amoussou looked impressive in his victory over David Rickels. Also on the card was a special women’s contest against Megumi Fujii and Jessica Aguilar that left fans demanding more after three rounds of action.
Emanating from the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., Tuesday night's UFC on Fuel TV 3 saw main event fighter "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung move into featherweight title contention with a dominant victory over opponent Dustin Poirier. With 4,592 fans in attendance, the promotion's second visit to "Old Dominion" garnered a reported live gate of $343,175.
The season six featherweight tournament finals were held at Friday evening’s Bellator 68 event from Caesars Atlantic City in New Jersey. Marlon Sandro took on Daniel Straus in the main event, and when the battle was over, one man stood with not only a shot at the Bellator featherweight championship, but also a check for $100,000. Also highlighted on the stacked card was a bantamweight tournament semi-final between Marcos Galvao and Travis Marx.
The UFC has confirmed it will film an Australian edition of its hit reality television series "The Ultimate Fighter," giving Aussie and British mixed martial artists the opportunity to secure a lucrative contract with the world’s preeminent mixed martial arts organization. The Australian series, dubbed "The Smashes" will see undiscovered professional MMA fighters from Australia and the United Kingdom live together in The Ultimate Fighter House in Australia and compete against each other for a prized UFC contract.
While this weekend may seem virtually bereft of MMA action to the casual fan base, tonight’s Bellator 68 promises to deliver excitement in spades, featuring the season six featherweight tournament final between Marlon Sandro and Daniel Straus, as well as a bantamweight tournament semifinal which will see Travis Marx—coming off an upset over the perennial Masaktsu Ueda—clashing with Marcos Galvao. One non-tournament bout of note is the catchweight tilt between Waachiim Spiritwolf and Marius Zaromskis.
The Bellator 68 weigh-ins have been completed from Atlantic City, N.J. in preparation for Bellator’s Friday night event at Caesars Atlantic City, which features the featherweight tournament finals between Daniel Straus and Marlon Sandro. Also, a Bellator season six bantamweight tournament semifinal fight will take place as Marcos Galvao meets Travis Marx. Additionally, Marius Zaromskis will square off against Waachiim Spiritwolf while Seth Petruzelli will face Carmelo Marrero in a catchweight matchup.
The UFC’s third offering on Fox delivered by all accounts. Emanating from a the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the main card gave fans what many felt initial Fox showings had been lacking hitherto. The network broadcast portion of the card provided a coming out party, a passing of the torch, an upset, and a firefight all in one sitting.
Bellator Fighting Championships rolled into Rama, Ontario Friday evening with a bevy of stars. Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler took on former Pride and UFC star Akihiro Gono in the main event at the Casino Rama, and Bryan Baker faced Ben Saunders in a welterweight tournament semi-final. Also in action Friday were heavyweight Damian Grabowski and welterweight Ryan Ford.
The Bellator 67 weigh-ins have been completed from Orillia, Ontario, Canada in preparation for Bellator’s Friday night event at Casino Rama, which features a lightweight fight between Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler and opponent Akihiro Gono. Also, a Bellator season six welterweight tournament semifinal fight will take place as Ben “Killa B” Saunders meets Bryan “The Beast” Baker. Additionally, Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford will square off against Luis “Sapo” Santos in a welterweight clash while Damian “Polish Pitbull” Grabowski will face Dave “Bad Man” Huckaba in a heavyweight matchup.
The Maximum Fighting Championship’s welterweight title bout set for "MFC 33: Collision Course" has been secured after both combatants stepped off the scale at the official weigh-in. Nathan Coy, who fights out of American Top Team’s camp in Coconut Creek, Fla., hit the scale at 169.4 pounds, while rival Ryan McGillivray, fighting in his home town of Edmonton, Alberta, registered in at 169.6 pounds. The MFC welterweight title matchup headlines Friday night’s card airing live on HDNet Fights from the Mayfield Conference Centre beginning at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT.
The sport of mixed martial arts is, by it’s very nature, mimetic. Given the history of the sport, which slowly weeded out the aspects of “fighting” that didn’t work in the traditional arts, while constantly including new techniques once they were proven, it seems only natural that mimetic behavior would bleed through to life outside the cage. With Alistair Overeem’s recent comments regarding his elevated testosterone levels, he joins a long list competitors who’ve pled ignorance to a medication or supplement’s ability to alter results of a state sanctioned drug screening. It almost seems like “the new black” at this point.
Friday’s Bellator 66 event, from I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio, provided one of the most explosive fight cards of the season. With a main event bout pitting former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez against Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki, how could it be anything less. However, more than just the headliners provided the action tonight. A scuffle between the two men that will battle for the middleweight tournament final erupted following their semi-final fights, and a finalist from last season had arguably the best performance of his young career.
